The UN Security Council with 14 of 15 members voting in favor has passed a resolution demanding an end to the construction of Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian territories.
The resolution was introduced to the UNSC by New Zealand, Malaysia, Venezuela and Senegal.
The resolution has been drafted by Egypt. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has issued a message, urging the U-S to veto the resolution. The United States vetoed a similar one in 20-11. Washington has shielded Tel Aviv against such moves at the Security Council on several other occasions in the past. The U-N and the international community view Israeli settlements as illegal and an obstacle to peace.
